Transplant Association

About us

The Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association is a voluntary patient and family support group. Its membership includes heart, lung(s) and heart and
lung transplant recipients and their families.

The association began providing support for patients soon after the first heart transplant operation in Ireland was successfully completed in the Mater Hospital in 1985.

As life saving transplant activity increased, the association began growing year by year. The association was renamed and formally relaunched under its present name in November 1998 by our patron, President Mary McAleese.
The first lung transplant took place in the Mater Hospital in May 2005. It is hoped that in the foreseeable future, the Irish Lung Transplant Programme currently based inThe Freeman Hospital,Newcastle, England, will be fully repatriated.

The National Heart and Lung Transplant unit in the Mater has been fully operational for some time, offering pre-assessment and post-operative care to existing recipients and potential transplant patients.

The Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association is recognised by the Department of Health and Children.

As transplant recipients,we are uniquely placed to offer help and encouragement to anyone who needs to contact us.We have been through it all before, and our advice and support is only a phone call away!

You can find our contact details, including email, postal address, fax and telephone numbers on the contacts page.
