The Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association is a voluntary organisation which includes heart, lung(s), heart and lung transplant recipients, families and supporters.
The association began providing support for patients soon after the first heart transplant operation in Ireland was successfully completed in the Mater Hospital in 1985.
As life saving transplant activity increased, the association began growing year by year. The association was renamed and formally relaunched under its present name in November 1998 by our patron, President Mary McAleese.
Prof. Freddie Wood FRCSI, who heads the National Heart and Lung Transplant Programme at the Mater Misercordiae University Hospital is the association's President. We are a member of the Irish Donor Network and are affiliated to the European Heart & Lung Transplant Federation.
